As soon as I asked readers to share their thoughts about cannabis stocks, their comments began to pour in from coast to coast.

Many say they’ve made a lot of money …

Neal D., who followed my cannabis stock recommendations, contacted me separately, writing “My cannabis portfolio is up $109,000 in just four weeks.”

Ken wrote: “Love the gains seen in my portfolio. Keep them coming!”

But others are still confused or on the sidelines …

Laura says she hasn’t invested simply because she doesn’t know how to pick the best stocks.

John confesses he HAS invested, but in the wrong ones.

And Louis writes, that in his personal experience, “it’s not easy to find out the best companies that could provide the highest returns on investment.”

So whether you’ve got a stake in this fast-growing sector or not, I have a critical question for you:

What do you think is the best way
to pick the right cannabis stocks to buy?

yes, I started about a year ago and am convinced it is one of the more actionable stocks going. I have stuck with aurora (acb) and have dabbled in several others.

No. Its as easy to grow as lettuce and anyone with a closet or back yard can produce it. Private growers will peddle it everywhere including farmer’s markets and street corners.

Hal, you make a good point about growing marijuana. At the Cannabis Conference I recently attended in Toronto, one speaker after another made a point about the “commoditization of cannabis.” But there is so much more to the business than just growing it. So much more value to be added at every step along the way.

Yes, I have invested in a few cannabis stocks such as Canopy Growth (CGC) and Tilray Corp. (TLRY). For the most part, these investments have been very profitable for me. I’m invested in these two companies right now. I’ve considered investing in microcap cannabis stocks but haven’t done it so far.

Hello, yes I have invested in these stocks, but perhaps the wrong ones. A lot of the ones I did invest in went down but never recovered. Most went sideways, then down in a slow spiral. I have been buying more, when I see that the ask price will increase the value of what I already own. Sometimes only a hundred
shares will bump the value up quite a bit, but overall it hasn’t been very good at all. Like I said, I bought the wrong ones.
    Kindest regards, Mark Kopieczek

I have not invested in cannabis stocks ( or cryptocurrencies for that matter) because I know nothing, and have no feeling for, the drug/ stimulant trade. Ergo any investment I might make in these areas would be entirely a pure gamble.
Generally speaking, Sean, I like the things you write; especially on precious metals!

As a Canadian I bought on the TSE via my bank in a tax free investment account about a year before legalization. Did the research reading and bought the top 10 and the ETF for cannibis stocks. All did well enough that cashed out my initial investment and played with “house money”. Watched daily; the day after legalization I sold everything, took the profits and watched the fall from the heights. Can’t decide if I want to play it again or not.

I have been investing in cannibis stocks in Canada and the USA connected ones since the beginning of 2017. It has been a roller coaster of a ride but if you did research and selected some of the better players you did well. There are so many “talking heads” that seem to move the market quite a bit with very contradictory views. I looked at it as when are you ever going to get another chance to invest in a legalized, massively used drug, with hundreds of benefits medically ever again. I do regret trading some of the big players instead of letting it be a long term investment but if you have the time you can make money on the regular pullbacks and some of the negative sentiment that creates good buying opportunities.

Of course, it could all go up in smoke as money is only money after all. Funny thing is, I have friends who are wonderful gardeners and I hate to spend money on what is just weed, so my contribution to this supposed multi-bazillion dollar market is still going to be zero.

    Good luck with your research.

I don’t know how to even begin, although I am wanting to invest. Which company is the best, how do I make the initial investment with them? If marijuana is not legal yet in Missouri, is it legal for me to purchase stocks for it? I cannot afford a large investment. These questions are what is keeping me from it, just not knowing how to get started.

Aurora Cannabis, Cronos Group, Canopy Growth, GW Pharma, Hexo Corp, Innovative Industrial Properties, the green organic Dutchman, Horizon Marijuana Life etf, Plus Products, Charlotte Web holdings, Cresco Labs, Curaleaf Holdings, Green Thumb industries, Ianthus Capital holdings,

The last 6 are US companies – I think. Everywhere you can read something will happen in US in this matter????

Above, as you can see, I have one etf. I would like to have more and I read somewhere 3 new etfs were launched yesterday, but i can not buy them, because “US etf:s” (cannabis, what ever) are we not allowed to buy here in EU – Eu law,

Yes, I have. When they doubled, I sold half. So have several (4) cannabis stocks without a cost, i.e. holding free stocks. They are very volatile! Also have some that are just setting there. Bought some so cheaply, and so few, it hardly matters. If they start to move, I’ll reconsider.

I question both the short and long good for society related to the overall well being of individuals and society. I could have made money with tobacco stock but chose not to due to bodily harm.

20% of portfolio is Cannabis. 400% return over year and a half. Very volatile, risk management/position sizing a must!
Currently VFF, CGC, HEXO, IIPR, ELLXF, BBRRF, CWBHF, KHRNF. BLOZF will become interesting next year when they finish their THC breathalyzer.

This is similar to the end of Alcohol prohibition -many fortunes were made. But more important than the money is freeing up the medicinal uses of Cannabis. It is a wonder plant, able to treat many maladies like PSTD, epilepsy, pain and cancer. In fact the US Department of Health and Human Services holds US Patent #6,630,507 –cannabinoids for the prevention and treatment of diseases including auto-immune disorders, stroke, trauma, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and dementia. CBD is a cannabinoid, 1 of about 200 distinct compounds in Cannabis. While the Drug Enforcement Agency says there are “no medicinal uses” for Cannabis. It is also one of the only plant sources that supplies all the essential dietary amino acids.

Drop all charges and jail time for anyone in prison because these are not your criminals. Legalization should most likely take a few more years because the states that hold back will realize they are missing the revenue boat that they desperately need. Yes , I own a few cannabis stocks.

I think the Day traders really affect this industry adversely. If a stock goes up 20 cents they sell & if it goes down 20 cents they buy – Can’t build up any momentum, I kind of wish I hadn’t invested in it. The best one I have is HEXO.

It’s been reported that Trump will try to legalize cannibis before the Nov. election as more Governors, members of congress and polls show an increasing pro-position; that includes William Weld, Republican 2020 presidential candidate. There is enough support in the House now and by mid-2020 sufficient votes in the Senate.

If, as WEISS suggests, more global investors redirect their dollars to the U.S., it’s probable that some will go to the growing cannibas market. For me, ETF’s make it easier than choosing which of the stocks will safely grow in the next three years or who will merge with who.

I bought $1500 of the new ETF, YOLO at $24.91 for my $100,000 traditional IRA portfolio. It’s actively managed not passive like MJ. I’m a retiree depending on a pension, social securit, supplemented by stock dividends and some growth.

Will be checking the outcome of several events:

4.25 Tobacco company Altria Group Inc., which holds a 45 percent stake in Cronos Group Inc., reports first-quarter results with a call at 9 a.m. New York time

Having been familiar with this industry for sometime, I would like to make a couple of salient comments. In the states which have legalized growing there is over production with a resulting drop in prices. The CBD oil market is rife with fake or highly adulterated or low quality oil products. On the research side, the Israelis have been conducting research and acquiring patents on compounds since the 1970s, and the largest most diversified seed bank is located in the Netherlands. I approached this industry very conservatively through adding to our Altria holdings. As in the infancy of any industry it will be very difficult to pick long term winners at this time, as the E word (earnings) may prove very elusive for many companies. Paying a high multiple for possible future earnings from companies which have no sustainable lock on the market or patent protection makes very little sense.

I use several measures: Past history (if any), company game plan, liquidity, ratios, institutional investor interest (if any), who is the competition, and financial capability to perform in a sufficient manner.

I’m up considerably since I started investing back in 2016. I personally own: CGC, ACB, CRON, ORNHOF, OGRMF, SPRWF, XXII, CWBHF, MMNFF, ACRGF, CURLF, EMHTF, CANN, IMLFF. Out of the above 14 stocks only three are showing a loss: EMHTF, CANN, IMLFF. I firmly believe that even these three will show nice improvement once the industry, as a whole, is more stable.

Of the eleven showing profits, the profits range from 117% to as high as 1,768% in less than three years. I haven’t made the kind of profits all the newsletter people claim (I do my own due diligence); however, I have made good gains and feel safe in the companies I’ve invested in. A few of the companies I’ve bought and sold several times over (XXII, CGC, CRON) reaping great returns in doing so.

Overall, I truly believe in investing in this mega opportunity. One must take care, however, to do their own due diligence when investing in marijuana companies. If you’re new to investing in the marijuana mega trend I suggest any of the above as a great start. Even though most have already shown tremendous growth since I first bought in, I believe they will do even better over the long term (next 2 – 3 years). Forget the hypothesis of making 10X returns in under one year. I’ve been investing for over 50 years and can tell you that your chance of making 10X returns within a year are next to impossible. Having said that, however, I have made 100% RETURNS IN A PERIOD OF ONE YEAR ON NUMEROUS OCCASSIONS. This is not unreasonable, I can assure you.

Just so you know my secret, I pray diligently before making any investment. I trust in my Savior Jesus Christ more than myself . . . any time! Try it, it does work, BUT, only if you’re sincere in your trust in the Lord.

    Good investing & God bless,
    Bob Bucknell

I’m anxiously awaiting your recommendations for Cannabis stocks. There is a blizzard of Cannabis stock recommendations on the internet. I’m avoiding them because of my trust in your abilities to find us the soundest investments.

First cannabis stock investment was in CRON back in Jan, 2019. Within a month or so, the stock had more than doubled in price! Talking about beginner’s luck! Recently sold all shares at about an 80% profit (still not bad). Unfortunately, the investment was “small”, but I had never had that kind of return ever. So based on that experience, I am a believer!! Right now I have other “small” positions in ACB, CGC, HEXO, and MJ. Could lightening strike twice? Please advise 🙂

I have been buying into pot stocks since mid 2016 and am profitable in CURLF, CWBHF, KHRNF, ELLXF, CRLBF, CRON, ORHOF, WDDMF, ITHUF, ORGMF, CGC, ACB, ACRGF and NEPT.
I got in too early on some (buying too high) so my profits are not as large as it I had waited for pullbacks.
I also hLave 16 stocks that are not yet profitable for the same reason as above but are moving up nicely now.

I do not have large sums of money to invest; therefore I will have to start small reinvest over and over. Then when I have made my start I can go bigger. How do I do that? I have never had one stock. I have books I have read but I am more confused now than at the start. I am not young either do not have years in front of me they are behind me now. Thank you for any help

I believe it will be companies that have branded products to sell now and in the future. These companies will separate the wheat from the chaff or in our case the flower from the stem. As investors we are going to have to think outside the box.

OGRMF and IIPR are the only two whose timing is reasonably good at present. CRON no longer is. I can’t attend a live event at 2 P.M. on a work day–especially if it would necessitate installing anything on my company computer.

I haven’t invested in cannabis stocks mainly because I have a moral and religious doubt about buying them. I know they’re legal in many places but I’m afraid it’s kinda like investing in a casino, just not the best way to invest. I’ll listen to your proposal however and go from there.

Not investing for the same reason that I am not investing in anything else. Basically the bull market is very long in the tooth and only being supported by Financial Engineering. When it collapses it will take all stocks down including CBD stocks. So am making a list of stocks to buy after the collapse.

I have invested in 4 Cannabis stocks. Made about $13,000 in a month; but since I cashed in they have all gone down in value. It has been a crap shoot, and everyone wants to give advice for a big price.

Review the offerings of as many stock investor sites as you can at this time to create a ranking of those that come closest to hitting their targets.

Beware of surveys and polls. Too many ways to skew the results toward a preferred result, which may not be reflected in the general population. 95%+ was the pollsters numbers for Hillary Clinton in the Presidential Election no less. What a travesty that turned out to be! Wonder why we have so much gun violence in Colorado with students or other young folks? What’s legal out there that’s missing in most states? Ask the law enforcement community what they think of the new reality in states with legal recreational marijuana? Whether its booze or drugs, an altered mind behind the wheel of a vehicle, or near a firearm is extremely dangerous…especially when the individual has other issues already working between their ears.
